When to do it
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. The best time to prep is late winter and spring, before crews are booked up and before the first named storm. Once a storm is in the forecast, most crews are already busy and it is too late for anything but the most urgent work.
What a pre-storm walk-through looks for
- Dead trees and dead limbs, especially pines and any limbs over the roof, cars or pool cage.
- Leaning trees with cracked soil or lifted roots on the opposite side.
- Dense crowns that catch the wind. Thinning lets wind pass through.
- Weak forks (V-shaped unions with bark pinched in between), which can split in high wind.
- Decay: hollows, fungus at the base, or soft wood.
- Overhanging limbs on the house, garage and screen enclosures.
Trees that tend to struggle in storms
In Central Florida, laurel oaks, water oaks, and pines with damaged roots or trunks are often the trees that come down. Healthy live oaks and sabal palms are usually more wind tolerant. Every tree is different, so have someone look at yours rather than going by species alone.
Don't overdo it
Stripping palms bare ("hurricane cuts") or topping oaks can weaken them and make the next storm worse. Proper thinning and dead-wood removal is the goal, not cutting the tree down to a stub.

Questions people ask
Does hurricane prep guarantee my trees won't fall?
No. Nothing can guarantee that. Proper pruning and removing hazard trees lowers the risk, especially near the house.
Should I cut all my palm fronds before a storm?
No. Over-pruned palms are weaker. Remove dead fronds and loose coconuts or seed pods, and leave the green fronds.
