The right way to trim a palm
Remove only fronds that are fully brown or hanging well below horizontal, plus flower and seed stalks if they are messy or heavy. Green fronds feed the palm. Many extension services, including UF/IFAS, warn against cutting green fronds above the horizontal line. The "pineapple" or "hurricane cut" that leaves just a few fronds at the top looks neat, but it starves the palm and can thin the trunk over time.
Why climbing spikes matter
Spikes punch holes in palm trunks that never heal and can let in disease. Good palm crews use a bucket truck, ladder or climbing gear without spikes on palms they aren't removing. Ask how they plan to reach the top.
Common palm problems in Citrus County
- Nutrient deficiency: yellow or frizzled fronds, often from potassium or manganese shortage in our sandy soil. Fertilizer made for palms helps.
- Ganoderma butt rot: a fungus at the base. There is no cure, and infected palms usually need removal before they fall.
- Lethal bronzing: a disease that has killed palms across Florida. A browning spear leaf is a warning sign; have it checked.
- Cold damage: queen palms and some others can be hurt by hard freezes.
Palm removal
Dead or diseased palms can be dropped in open yards or taken down in sections near houses. Palm stumps are fibrous and usually ground out. If disease is the reason, ask whether replanting a palm in the same spot is a good idea.

Questions people ask
How often should palms be trimmed?
Many palms only need trimming once a year or so to remove dead fronds and seed stalks. Over-trimming does more harm than good.
Can a sick palm be saved?
Nutrient problems usually can be treated. Ganoderma and lethal bronzing generally can't; a pro can help you tell the difference.
