Grinding vs. full removal
Grinding uses a machine with a spinning toothed wheel to chew the stump down several inches below the soil. The roots stay in the ground and slowly rot. It is the most common choice for lawns and beds. Full removal digs out the stump and main roots. It costs more and leaves a big hole, but may be needed where you plan to build, pour concrete or put in a pool.
Why get rid of a stump
- Trips and falls, especially for kids and older visitors.
- Damage to mowers and trimmers.
- Termites, carpenter ants and fungus like decaying wood.
- Some trees, like laurel oaks, send up new sprouts from the stump for years.
- It is in the way of sod, a garden bed, a fence or a driveway.
What affects the price
Stump width at ground level, how many stumps, how hard it is to get the grinder to them (gates, slopes, fences), and what you want done with the grindings all matter. Many crews give a better per-stump price for several at once or when grinding is added to a tree removal. Rough estimate ranges are in our cost guide.
Before the grinder shows up
- Call 811 (Sunshine 811) or ask your pro to. Utility lines must be marked before digging.
- Point out irrigation lines, septic tanks and drain fields. These are common in Citrus County and easy to damage.
- Ask how deep they grind and whether they backfill with topsoil.
- Keep kids and pets indoors. Grinders throw chips.
After grinding
You will be left with a pile of wood chips and soil. You can use it as mulch, or ask the crew to haul it off and fill the hole with topsoil so you can lay sod. Expect the spot to settle a little over the next few months as roots decay.

Questions people ask
How deep do they grind?
Commonly several inches below grade, enough for sod or mulch. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot, ask for deeper grinding and a full chip cleanout.
Will the roots grow back?
Most won't. Some species can sprout from roots; a pro can tell you what to expect and how to deal with sprouts.
